Pocketses
I know it's been a long time since my last post. But when you read this, you'll probably wish I waited a little longer.
The past ten days have seen midterms for Mama, deadlines for Daddy, and a visit from GranMary (we're trying to phase out "Mimi," but it ain't easy for any of us) for her favorite granddaughter. There were so many wonderful moments between GranMary and Siena that it's tough to decide what's blogworthy. So I'll pick something almost unrelated to current events: pockets.
Specifically, pants pockets. Siena loves them. She's fascinated by them. Whenever she discovers them in the pants that she's wearing, she immediately digs in her hands and announces "Pockets! Hip Pockets!"
It usually doesn't occur to her to actually place anything in her pockets, and let's face it, what does a toddler need to carry around when there's invariably an adult lugging a diaper bag not three feet away? But she has toted the occasional nickel or quarter in her hip pocket, and once tried to stuff in her back pocket an old cell phone that we gave her as a toy.
What's the fascination with pockets? Got to be a part of growing up, and with it the burgeoning desire to act older than you are. She doesn't need pockets yet, but she loves having them because it's one more thing that she now shares with Mama, Daddy, and the other grown-ups around her.
She refers to herself as a "Big Girl," her fondness for diapers notwithstanding. She loves to do things herself; even going down stairs, she insists that you go all the way down first to ensure that she can go down without assistance. And she's putting together more sentences--or maybe she's just remembering more sentences and using them at appropriate times. So walking around with hands in pockets is just another way of, as Confucius would say, being what you wish to seem. Alright, Confucius didn't speak English, but you get my point.
My little girl is growing up. Soon she'll have something to put in those pockets. And that something will likely come from my bank account.
